Second Avenue Rag
by Ellen Schwartz and Joel Diamond
Ellen and her collaborator Joel Diamond wrote several songs to accompany this straight play written by Allan Knee. The play tells the story of Jewish tailor on the Lower East Side who is infatuated with the Yiddish theater and specifically with the actress, Bertha, a “shining light” of the Yiddish stage. The play received a production at the Penguin Repertory Theatre, which was reviewed by The New York Times. The review praised the music, which it described as “composed most felicitously” by Ellen and Joel, and singled out Judy Stadt’s performance in the part of Bertha as “captivating.”
